The outdoor dance scene is enduring. Since 2004, I've photographed events happening on the Riegelmann Boardwalk at Coney Island. To watch others dance out of doors in open spaces--typically to House Music.
House Music is a cultural phenomenon originating in the Chicago clubs of the 1980s. The legacy of it's undergound origins are still present in these outdoor events. They're scheduled throughout the Summer months at multiple venues throughout the city by DJs who are mainstays in the dance-club circuit.House Music's Black & Gay legacy continue to be key components in its longivity. As I've explored the New York City outdoor dance scene, I've come to understand that though the "House Heads" command a presence at these events, it's the public openness that allow anyone to join in and dance. The atmosphere is akin to a multicultural mixed salad.
